ACTIVITIES IN THE NATURE

FOR THE MOST ACTIVE VISITANTS

NERVIÓN WATERFALL

At 270 m high, it is the largest waterfall in the entire Iberian Peninsula. Despite the fact that the flow of water in the waterfall is not constant, after heavy rains or during the melting of snow in winter and spring, we are offered one of the greatest spectacles that the nature of Kuartango offers us. But even without water, the views from the balcony that overlooks the cliff will undoubtedly remain marked in the memory of visitors, making it a must-see.

It has access by road from Orduña to Monte de Santiago or from the town of Luna at the bottom of the Kuartango Valley, just over 1 hour 30 minutes (round trip). Another option would be from the neighboring town of Unzaa from where it would takeapprox. 2 hours 30 min. (round trip) after a slight climb of 20 min.

SIERRA DE GIBIJO

A spectacular place with meadows, beech forests and oak groves where we can visit the Lobera de Gibijo which, together with the nearby Salto del Nervión, are the oldest buildings dedicated to this purpose in the area. A wolf pit is a corridor of 2 funnel-shaped stone walls that leads to a well in which the locals, after urging the animals by directing them between its two walls, hunted them. The last raid in which the last two wolves were captured with this ancient technique dates back to 1955.

Not far from the lobera, is the impressive ancient Gibijo oak, which is estimated to be more than 800 years old. Taking a circular route through the mountains you can visit these points along with the hermitages of La Trinidad and San Antonio, both from the 16th century.

GUJULI WATERFALL

A few kilometers from Izarra is another large waterfall. With its 100 m drop it is not as spectacular as the Salto del Nervión but on the contrary, it is common to see it with water. From a parking lot before reaching the town of Gujuli on the right, access is via a path that takes 5 min. It takes us to a viewpoint where we can contemplate it.

LAMIOXIN LAGOON
AND WATERFALL
OF ALTUBE

Bird watching lovers have a unique opportunity to visit, especially during the migratory season, the Lamioxin lagoon or well of the Lamias or fairies, which in Basque mythology were female figures of great beauty and with duck feet that combed their long hair with golden combs on the shores of lakes and rivers. A charming and quiet place surrounded by beech forests where you can sit for a while in silence on its shore to observe water birds, amphibians and dragonflies.

From there we can go visit another of the great natural attractions of the area, a waterfall that always has water. The path surrounded by beech trees and the humidity of the enclave makes it a truly refreshing experience, especially in summer.
